For Fans Of: Gym Class Heroes.
There are many talented and famous artists that Australia claims as their own; such as Shihad (New Zealand), Russell Crowe (New Zealand), John Butler (America), the list goes on. The Australian hip-hop scene has been gifted the presence of the ridiculously talented Snob Scrilla. ‘Day One’ is his debut album and one that deserves everyone’s respect.
The album starts off with the politically charged tracks ‘Houston’ and ‘Alienation’. Scrilla has a lot to say about real issues, which is refreshing after the amount of songs being released about drinking and sex. For the next three songs, ‘Chasing Ghosts’, ‘Heartbreak Scorsese’, and ‘There You Go Again’, Scrilla continues the domination of the listeners mind. The chances of music fans in Australia to not have heard ‘Heartbreak Scorsese’ and ‘There You Go Again’ are as slim as Reggie Miller. To resist singing and dancing along to those two songs would be like the Jersey Shore cast turning straight edge. Slowing things down and showing us his softer side, Scrilla presents the listener with ‘Already Gone’ and the extension of that song ‘………’. Proving that he is just as good at writing soft, slow ballads, as he is at turning the dance floor into a frenzy. ‘………’ will leave the listener experiencing the exact same emotion that Scrilla is expressing. Things pick back up with ‘It’s On You’ and ‘Spaceship’. So for those who do not like to get in touch with their sensitive side do not worry. To finish the album with a track that needs to be up to the standard of what lays before is a high task, but one that he is up to and accomplishes with ‘Hardest Times’. This song is epic to say the least, and includes some beautiful guest vocals from Ines. ‘Day One’ is an album that would be expected from an artist releasing their third not first CD. Snob Scrilla has proved how talented and intelligent he is and that he is now setting the level for Australian hip-hop.
Those who are not fans of this genre because of ‘artists’ such as the one and only Soulja boy, well Snob Scrilla is the opposite and one that can win over fans from other genres. Music with a message is powerful, no matter what genre. ‘Day One’ is a debut album that has already cemented Snob Scrilla in Australian music history. With his ability to ignite dance floors, explode mosh pits and touch our emotions, there is no stopping Snob Scrilla.
