The Butterfly Effect losing their vocalist, Clint Boge, getting you down? Well then you need to go check out Glenn Esmond’s (Bassist for TBE) solo project A Family Of Strangers. Last year saw the release of the groups debut EP, and they are back already with EP number two titled ‘Old Faiths In New Light’.

When the opening track ‘New Era’ kicks in it confirms the statements made by the band that this is time round the tunes are a lot darker and heavier. But that being said the standout track is the acoustic ‘Garnet Street’, in which Glenn takes the listener on an emotional journey. The following track, ‘Thank You’, takes things back onto the dark side, with deep heartbreaking lyrics like, “Fuck you and I love you so just leave.” Showing off his years of experience and class the EP finishes with its strongest all around track ‘Soundtrack’.

‘Old Faiths In New Light’ is not ‘New Techniques For Beginners And Champions part II’. Fans of The Butterfly Effect will love this music and probably realise that they should focus their attention to the man behind the bass a little more during shows. This is rock music made for radio, so lets hope someone gives it some airplay.

For Fans Of: The Abandonment, I Killed The Prom Queen, Day Of Contempt.

In Trenches are made up of members from a few of Australia’s prominent heavy bands Day Of Contempt, I Killed The Prom Queen, and The Abandonment. ‘Sol Obscura’ is their second EP and cements their position as one of the countries most talented and promising groups round today. Just don’t expect to hear a mimic of Day Of Contempt or I Killed The Prom Queen.

The music they produce is very dark and temperamental. Once again the guitar work by Kevin Cameron (IKTPQ) throughout is mesmerizing. He manages to go from a pounding riff to a complex lick in a split second with ease. Complimenting his work is the unmistakable vocals of Ben Coyte (DOC), who has finally found a place after the split of Day Of Contempt. ‘An Impending Collapse’ is the first single from the release and is a monster of noise. Sure to be a live favourite. A noticeable change this time round is the production of their sound is a much better fit for their style, compared to ‘Relive and Regret’. Unfortunately there is no strand out track and once again you are left feeling that their full potential has not yet been reached.

‘Sol Obscura’ is a creative piece of music that not many would be able to duplicate. With the talent that the band possess it is no wonder why expectations are so high. Which is why one cannot help but hope the next release is literally mind-blowing.
