For Fans Of: In Flames, Deez Nuts, In Trenches.
I Killed The Prom Queen built themselves a solid fan base with singer Michael Crafter at the helm. So often when bands loose such a key member they never come back as strong. With new singer Ed Butcher and a new sound the question is will it work?
‘Music For The Recently Deceased’ is a huge step away from their previous more hardcore friendly efforts and an even bigger step towards metal. ‘Sharks In Your Mouth’ is the perfect opener. It is so much faster and heavier than what fans of the band are accustomed. It also is a big ‘THIS IS WHAT WE ARE NOW’ slap in the face. Guitarist Jona and Kevin really have shown what they are capable of creating. Those two skinny dudes will make big, hairy, shirtless metal-heads all around the world bow to them with the riffs scattered throughout all the songs. The first thing you will notice is that they haven’t just recruited any old singer but what seems to be the devil himself. If it’s not enough that Butcher sounds like the devil his lyrics are just as brutal. Perfect example being in the song ‘Like Nails To A Casket’, ‘I’ll be waiting with an open casket, to bury you alive’.
‘Say Goodbye’ is their first single off the album. As soon as the first solid riff hits you, it lets you know that you are in store for something catchy as hell. If you had to choose an Australian metal song to play to someone overseas, this should definitely be your pick. That being said it will fool many people to thinking that all their new songs have the typical clean singing chorus, which is completely wrong. Which is also shown when they somehow managed to make Butcher sing something incredibly nice and beautiful that even the most metal of metal-heads will rock out too on ‘Sleepless Nights And City Lights’.
‘Music For The Recently Deceased’ bridges the gap between hardcore kids and metal-heads. The question of whether will the new singer and new sound work is decapitated and then tortured in the afterlife. Australian metal is definitely displayed at its finest here. I Killed The Prom Queen have proven to the rest of the world that Australians can create heavy music and do it damn well.
